On a beautiful fall evening we (me and my partner in crime Mr smiley) decided to have dinner at a spot that was previously occupied by Scoglios Restaurant. Cucina Vitale in Foster Plaza in the Greentree area of Pittsburgh.
We had reservations and were greeted by some nice young ladies, and taken to our table. While we were enjoying our Martinis the place began to fill up, so I recommend making reservations. While seated our server (sorry no names) was a lovely older lady who definitely knows how to treat her customers with the old school dining experience.
We started our culinary adventure with some bread, dipping oil and a roasted pepper hummus. Nice touch, but the bread was on the stale side and they only gave 2 small slices.
Appetizers included greens and beans and an order of mozzarella with tomato sauce. The beans and greens were excellent. They were creamy in texture and the pecorino cheese added just the right flavor. The mozzarella a little to saucy for our liking, but it tasted good. You can definitely taste that it is homemade mozzarella and it really makes a difference.
Next up wedding soup and Mr smiley got a salad. Soup was tasty with lots of meatballs, chicken and deliciousness, could of been a bit warmer. The salad was a typical side salad(mixed baby greens not that horrid iceberg lettuce) with balsamic dressing and crumbled blue cheese.
On to our main course. Wild mushroom risotto and chicken parmesan. This is were things took a little turn. The risotto presented beautifully, but the taste was off. Maybe to much truffle oil? The mushrooms may have been old? It had almost a bitter taste that was not very pleasant. According to Mr smiley, the chicken parmesan was tender and tasty, just a little to much sauce.
Dessert….what can I say? Can you really screw up a pecan ball? Yes, yes you can when there isnt enough chocolate or carmel dripping effortlessly down all sides. All we have to say is, be generous with your toppings, it means so much to your customers!
Cucina Vitale is a lovely place that offers good Italian food. The place is pretty and offers a full bar. They have rooms for parties and they do offer a catering menu. It makes a great date night destination, a girls night out, and a nice place to bring the family. I would feel very comfortable bringing children.
