While out shopping in Robinson one night in early December, myself and Mr Smiley decided we needed something different in our dining adventures. We heard of a place called Ruby’s Winehouse and wanted to check it out. So off to Coraopolis we went.
Ruby’s Winehouse is a cozy little place that offers a diverse menu of wines, specially crafted cocktails, bourbons, whiskey, vodka, gin and a few others. Wine flights are available for tastings. Rubys also offers small plates of Italian fare and thats what we were there for.
While small in size Ruby’s had a lovely vibe with pleasant greeters and helpful staff. The place was pretty full for a weekday evening. We managed to score a reservation for a 5pm seating. We started our dinner with a delicious seasonal winter sangria. Not only tasty, it looked beautiful too!
We enjoyed our libations while podering the menu choices. We were both hungry, so appetizers were definitely in order. First up, arancini with fontina and prosciutto. Delicious little rice balls that melted with all the goodness of cheese and prosciutto. They were splendid and gone in a few minutes. Next up, greens and beans with sausage, one of our favorite appetizers to order. It came out looking a little odd for greens and beans. It was to soupy! It was almost like eating a bowl of pasta fagiole. It tasted decent and had good flavor, but way to liquidy for our liking. The slice of garlic bread added a nice touch and helped sop up the broth. Not a deal breaker, but hope they are different next time we go back. And come back we will, because our small portion pastas were just the perfect size to fill our belly and still have room for dessert. Mr Smiley had Pasta bolognese. Perfectly cooked Tagliatelle with just the right amount of meat ragu. I had the cavatelli ala vodka, also properly cooked and sauced. The shaved parmesan cheese was just right. We appreciated the pasta not swimming in sauce. Both Pasta dishes came with a crunchy piece of garlic toast. Extra garlic toast is available for $1 a slice.
We saved room for dessert, a lovely piece of toasted almond torte cake. It was crunchy and creamy and quite delicious.
Final thoughts on Ruby’s Winehouse. It is cozy and cute, a little tight when busy, but you dont feel crowded or confined. They have a small bar with a few seats. The tables are a little close together, we were able to see what other patrons were ordering. (Side note. The couple next to us had the sugar cookie martini and said it was awesome!) Lots of beautifully crafted drinks went by and we heard nothing but compliments. Kudos to the bartenders! Ruby’s inside dining is an over 21 establishment, however in the warmer months when their patio is open children and pets are welcome. I think Ruby’s Winehouse would make a great date night, or an impressive first date spot. Definitely great for a girls night out! Is it pricey? yes, the portions are small and the drinks are amazing, but you do pay for all the wonderful ideas they come up with. They also offer catering and do accommodate larger parties.
The one big turn off are all the rules set forth for dining time( 2 hour max), credit card fees, reservation cancelation fee, credit card hold for larger parties. I know other dining establishments do this, but it just seemed a little much. So on that note, I recommend you read their policies before making a reservation.
